Top 5 Afro-Pop Artists Making Waves In 2016 Part 1

African music has evolved over the years and stemed off into different genres and titles including Afro-pop. Here is my list of the top 5 Afro-pop artists:

  1. WizKid

26-year-old Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun also known as WizKid is one of the hottest Nigerian pop stars to hit African music charts.  His breakout hit “Ojuelegba” put him on the Afro-Pop map and his popularity has continued to soar.  WizKid has collaborated with Drake and Kyla for “One Dance” which is bumping on radios from NYC to Ghana.

2. Davido

23-year-old American-born Nigerian musical success David Adedeji Adeleke better known as Davido has belted out hot tracks such as “Dami Duro”, “Gobe”, “Aye”, and “The Money” featuring Olamide. Davido continues to cross American music charts as evident by his new tune “How Long” featuring American singer Tinashe.

3. Shatta Wale

Some may remember Shatta Wale by his former moniker “Bandana.”  This 31-year-old Ghanaian was named Charles Nii Armah Mensah Junior and he is shaking things up a bit by representing the great GH with dancehall music vibes.  Shatta can easily be recognized when hearing his popular tracks “Baby Chop Kiss” and “Kai Kai.”  Be sure to check out his newest song called “Kill Dem With Prayers.”

4. Sarkodie

31-year-old Michael Owusu Addo is a budding Ghanaian Rapper and Hip-Life artist.  You may have heard his records “Choices”, “Finally” featuring Flavour, “Hand To Mouth”, and “Adonai” featuring Castro. Word on the street is Sarkodie will be signing with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation Records.  This partnership will surely take him to greater heights of stardom.

5. Tiwa Savage

Don’t fret, the ladies are running things too.  36-year-old Tiwatope Savage-Balogun is a multi-faceted woman who adds actress, performer, songwriter, and singer to her roster of talents. Some of her hottest singles include “African Waist”, Eminado” featuring Don Jazzy, “Romantic” featuring Korede Bello, and “My Darlin’.” Tiwa Savage recently signed to Jay-Z’s Roc Nation.
