The last post I made was comprised of a list of African artists with banging hits on the music charts from Nigeria to the U.S. I’m back with another list of musical artists because as we all know; we can never have enough of music. Keep reading to see if your favorite singer made the list this time around.
38-year old Enetimi Alfred Odon otherwise known as Timaya has graced us with hits such as “Better Than Them,” “Bum Bum,” and “Sexy Ladies.” Timaya hails from Nigeria and began his singing and song writing career in Port Harcourt and Lagos. In the earlier stages of his career, Timaya was a background singer in a musical hip-hop group formulated by Eedris Abdulkareem; a successful rapper from Kano, Nigeria. To date, Timaya has released six EP’s and received 8 African music awards.
27-year-old Olamide Adedeji or Olamide has only been a popular and multi-faceted recording artist since 2011, but his hits have made a strong impact with his fans worldwide. Olamide has belted out tunes such as “Bobo,” “The Money featuring Davido,” and “Confam Ni featuring WizKid.” Olamide Baddo as he is called by his admirers also hails from Nigeria and records his music in his native tongue Yoruba. Olamide has already won 20 African music awards over the span of his career.
R2Bees stands for Refuse To Be Broke and from the looks of things this dynamic duo is anything but lacking funds. This musical group is comprised of two close cousins Faisal Hakeem A/K/A Paedae and Omar Sterling and Rashid Mugeez A/K/A Mugeez. Paedae and Mugeez started their career as youngsters attending school in their Native Tema, a smaller town in Accra, Ghana. R2Bees would perform in school contests and rap competitions and this is what honed their skills. Their most popular hits include “Ajeii,” “Life (Wallahi),” and “Slow Down featuring WizKid. R2Bees mostly perform in Pidgin and Twi but incorporate Hausa in their songs as well. The group has won 9 African music awards thus far.
EL or Elom Adabiah is 33-year-old record producer, rapper, and sound engineer. EL is from Dansoman in Accra, Ghana and begin his musical career officially in 2008 but had been performing since his days in secondary school. Surely you’ve heard “KOKO” and “Check My Swagga” performed by EL. In April of this year, EL had the pleasure of headlining the Diaspora Rising! concert with Lauryn Hill, Stonebwoy, Wondaboy, and Mr.Eazi. EL has nine African music awards under his belt.
Rounding out the list this time is the beautiful and talented 29-year-old Efya or Jane Awindor from Kumasi, Ghana. Efya is a neo-soul singer, songwriter, musician and actress with a degree in theatre and music from the University of Ghana. Efya musical career began when she won a three year recording contract. Efya can be heard singing her heart out on tracks “Getaway,” “One Of Your Own,” and “Gingam Too Much.” Efya has won 8 African music awards so far.
